| This thesis chooses two overseas Chinese teaching materials Zhongwen and Hanyu(Junior Middle School)as the subject investigated. Quantitative statistics, comparative analysis and other methods adopted, comparisons of choices of subject, genre, length of texts, vocabulary and grammars of the texts of the two books are made, merits and drawbacks are discussed and suggestions for selection and compilation of overseas Chinese teaching materials are offered.In the aspect of subject, both breadth and depth are needed. The subject should focus on not only domestic but also overseas Chinese society, not only historical culture but also modern civilization, not only interesting but also practicability, helping the young develop correct outlook and values of life.In the aspect of genre, genres should be diversified, among which narrative is the first choice but practical writing, expository writing and argumentative writing are also essential.Poetry, ci and drama could appear within quantity constraints. Works of complicated background or weak practicability are not allowed to show up in the book.In the aspect of length, 700--1500 characters on average are suitable for an overseas Chinese teaching texts, but a small amount of short ones below 700 characters or long ones above 1500 characters are tolerable. Length of each sentence of intermediate and advanced overseas Chinese teaching materials are supposed to be restrained to two lines or 40 characters or so. Class period, modes of teaching and learning object should be also concerned in this respect.In the aspect of vocabulary, new words of each text should be kept down to about 40 in number for full-time Chinese learners and about 20 for weekends Chinese learners. Increases of the new words among texts should be limited at the level of about five. Vocabulary with Chinese characteristics like overseas Chinese society or country-specific features will be well received.In the aspect of grammars, both quality and quantity are concerned. The total grammar quantity should be suitable, 4 grammar items each text is suitable for middle and high ranking teaching materials, which yi and bing ranking grammar items should be the main part, and should increase the percent of ding rank grammars, at the same time, the percent of other grammar items should be in 30%. Grammars of the teaching materials should be arranged in order of difficulty and abide by the rules of language acquisition.Overall, the existential questions of compiling overseas Chinese teaching material include those below: lack of unified outline of compilation of teaching materials, weak pertinence and practicability of the texts, uneven quality of the materials, deficiency of supporting texts and so on. Our suggestions centering about the problems above are unifying the outline, assembling different types of materials, establishing text evaluation system, compiling multimedia materials and such macroscopically. |
