With the rapid development of film industry, subtitle translation plays a more important role in translation study. But there are a lot of problems in present subtitle translation, among which the ones in the translation of cultural default are most serious.According to Relevance Theory (RT), translation is the communication between translators and target readers. Thus subtitle translation can be regarded as the communication between subtitlers and target audience. The essential principle of Relevance Theory is: the key point of communication is to create an optimal relevance. And the main task of a subtitler is to find the optimal relevance to the source text in order that the audience can acquire adequate contextual effects with the least information-processing effort. The thesis is based on Relevance theory and Gutt's Translation Theory. First the author reviews the previous studies of subtitle translation and points out that cultural default in subtitle translation is the blank in translation studies. Then the author uses Friends to prove if the translation strategies based on Relevance Theory are effective in subtitle translation. The paper aims to analyze cultural default in subtitle translation from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics. It is the sincere hope of the author that the paper would be valuable in the translation study area.
