Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the Turkish film director, won the Palme d’Or at the 67 th Cannes Film Festival. Since the first short film Koza was selected for competition as one of the finalists, his works have always been outstanding at the Cannes Film Festivals. When the film UZAK establishing reputation for him, won the Grand Jury Prize and the Best Actor Prize at the 56 th Cannes Film Festival in 2003, Ceylan suddenly became an internationally recognized name and the hottest rising star of European film land in 21 st century.In 2006, Climates won the FIPRESCI Prizes after secondly competed in the festival’s main competition section. In 2008, Three Monkeys won the Best Director Award. In 2011,His film Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, the magnum opus which marked Ceylan as a master in the true significance,won the Grand Jury Prize again. In 2014, Winter Sleep won the Palme d’Or the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival, which rewarded Ceylan the highest glory. Ceylan has a unique style of his own to pursue freedom, known as "lone Wolf" of the mainland in Turkey. He has both sagacious perception of a sociologist and aestheticism of a lyricist, arousing great attention of Cannes Festivals and the world circle.With wise thinking and keen visions, Ceylan deeply investigates issues on humanity of mental loneness and life of living state. He delivers flouting images with his thought about life to the audience implicitly. Melancholy ending brings more shock and room for taste, beautiful photographic style as oil paintings, plain moving shot, meticulous generalization and concretization, as well as abundant natural sound,bring great en Joyment to the audience and make them understand to observe the world in the way of natural existentialist.This paper discusses Ceylan’s directing style through four parts: the international perspective based on his own country, the formation and evolution of his style, the reserved narrative style and the audio and visual features.In the first part, the uniqueness and complexity of personal style forming is analyzed by illustrating traditional Turkish film and its development, Ceylan’s growing background, the social and historical background of Turkey. the process of forming,evolution and completing of his style is revealed by explaining his creative stages.In the second part, the international perspective based on his country is stated by three parts: the influence of Ceylan’s creation theme made by Chekhov, the selection of localization story background and the universality spirit world.In the third part, the reserved narrative style is shown by analyzing the figures of speech, the narrative structure and the space settings.In the fourth part, the stylized audio and visual features are demonstrated through dissecting audio-visual elements including acoustics, dialogue, background music, big vision, long shot, conversions between vision and reality, and close-up lens language elements.In this thesis, Ceylan’s films are discussed through detailed inspection and research; the style of his works is generalized by literature query and summary. |
