This paper is a translation report on an excerpt from All about Coffee which was published in 1922. The book is an encyclopedia of coffee which introduces history of coffee propagation, its introduction into different parts of the world, early coffee drinking customs, coffee houses, the botany of the coffee plant, the cultivation and production of coffee, coffee trade, coffee advertisements, fine arts related to coffee and so on. The report will give a thorough description of the translation project from the aspects of “faithfulness” and “smoothness”, supported by Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory. And it will end with a summary about experience or gains and problems involved in the project. There are five parts in this report. Part One is the project description. Part Two describes the process of the project. Part Three summarizes Peter Newmark’s theories about text categories and communicative translation. Part Four deals with the problems in practice and analyzes them with examples. The last part is a summary of the practice including the lessons gained from this project and problems to be solved in the future.
