This article is a comparative study on "Cat City" and "Gulliver's Travels". The full text includes three parts: introduction, subject and epilogue.The introduction of this paper first introduces the significance of the topic. The academia haven't discuss on the comparative study of "Cat City" and "Gulliver's Travels" a lot. It mainly discussing some single characteristic of these two works. This paper tries to have a comparative study on the two works from three parts: the creative motivation, the main theme and the main artistic expression, so as to make some supplements and improvements. Then this article will introduce the current researches of the two works, and finally describe the main research methods and ideas of this article.The main body of this article includes three chapters. The first chapter analyzes and contrasts the creative motivation of "Cat City" and "Gulliver's Travels". During the time of working on the novels, although Lao She and Swift are in the different spaces and different political environments, they are both facing the same chaotic social condition. In face with the dark realities and political struggles of their times, Lao She and Swift have shown strong disappointments and deep dissatisfactions, they are full of anger feelings. The strong emotional motivations, political utopian aspirations and deep critical spirits have made the two writers look at the pathologies and the knot diseases of the society, politics and humanity calmly even they are in the different times and countries. The difference is that there are a lot of divergences in Lao She and Swift on their focuses of social issues, the dissatisfied objects, suffering social realities and the anger causes.The second chapter is the comparison of the theme about "Cat City" and "Gulliver's Travels". Both of them have exposed and criticized the dark social realities and political struggles vividly and also satirize the inferior humanity sharply. Through the Work, Lao She and Swift, each from a different perspective, examine the social phenomena. In the while, they convey their unique demands of utopian social ideal secretly. However, due to the different times, places and the writers' experiences and perceptions, there are some great differences in the focus and direction of the criticize, social problems and the critical degree in their novels. These also created the two works differ in the expression of theme.The third chapter is the comparison of the artistic expression in "Cat City" and "Gulliver's Travels". Both of the two works are in the form of travel genre and fantastic fable, they have chosen to use the form of fable to satirize the dark realities in an imaginative, novel and peculiar way. The fable form makes the text more flexible, the satire more sharply and the criticism more naked, it has realized the mind of criticism effectively. The common fantastic imagination and the critical mind of the two writers' make the text of the works more sharp, absurd and attacking. However, because of the different subjective ideology, the specific circumstances created by Lao She and Swift are different, so it will naturally be different on the effect of the two works' artistic irony.The conclusion part summarizes this paper. Through contrasting “Cat City” and “Gulliver's travels” from creative motivation, theme and artistic features, it will find out the same performance of literary creation of these two works, and detect the important influences that the excellent western literature have made on the Chinese Literature. Because of the differences of the traditional culture, the realistic background, the personality and so on, there must have some differences between the Western Literature and the Chinese Literature. By contrast, this article will analysis the unique charming parts of the two works.
