Studies On The Utopia And Dystopia Structure In Gulliver’s Travels

At present,academic interests of Gulliver’s Travels are more focused on its translation studies,writing techniques,comparative studies and subject researches,while less effort has been put in the studies of utopia and dystopia structure in Gulliver’s Travels.In fact,Gulliver’s Travels are filled with lots of fascinating contradictions and conflicts,in which not only presents the utopia portray of Brobdingnag and the Land of Houyhnhnms,but also the dystopia description of Lilliput and Laputa,it cannot be simply classified in a definition as the traditional utopian literature.Thus,based on the perspective of Marxist literary theory,this paper confirms its utopian feature by teasing out the structures of utopia and dystopia in Gulliver’s Travels.Moreover,by further analyzing the reasons of the co-existence of utopia and dystopia structure in this novel and discussing its influences on the development of the 18 th literature,thus eventually confirms its position in the historical development of utopian literature and the research value of Gulliver’s Travels.
