Study On English Interpretation Strategies Of Chinese Classic Quotation In The Light Of Skopos Theory

Chinese classic quotation, carrying Chinese five-thousand-year’s history, is the crystal of Chinese culture. Part of them originated form poetry, essay and drama, part of them originated from daily life. And in recent years, Chinese classic quotation has been quoted in government press conference frequently. It is not an easy task for the interpreter to give an efficient and proper rendition in press conference with limited time.This thesis collected and analyzed some interpretation renditions of Chinese classic quotation quoted in press conference from 2006 to 2015, and found Chinese classic quotation possessed some unique features, such as representing rich connotative meaning, containing many images, carrying concise form and rhythm.And this made the interpretation of Chinese classic quotation much harder. The first purpose for the interpreter to fulfill is to deliver the spokesman’s communicative intention and to accomplish the rendition’s function. And second, the interpretation should be logical and understandable. Last but not least, the interpretation should be loyal to the source text and be decent.This thesis found that skopos theory had a strong guiding significance for the English interpretation of Chinese classic quotation. With the guidance of skopos theory, this thesis took the realization of text function into consideration and collected some interpretation renditions of Chinese classic quotation which were quoted in government press conference from 2006 to 2015, and then analyzed what interpretation strategies the interpreter adopted to fulfill the utterance’s text function and the addresser’s communicative intention and to meet the audience’s expectant communicative needs fully. And the author found the interpreter adopted documentary translation strategy and instrumental translation strategy mostly. The interpreter adopted documentary interpretation strategy when he or she reappeared the source language situation. The interpreter adopted instrumental interpretation strategy when he or she created a new communicative situation and violated classic quotations’ linguistic form.
