A Practice Report On The Application Of Adaption And Substitution To Chinese Translation Of Subtitle Idioms In American TV Series

Under the guidance of adaptation and substitution,with the subtitle idioms in American TV series as the translation materials,aiming at the three problems summarized during the translation practice: contextual containment,asymmetrical structure and semantic default,this practice report explores the application of adaptation and substation in Chinese translation of subtitle idioms in American TV series.The selected subtitle idioms in the American TV series have typical features of colloquial idioms: popular and understandable,vivid and lively,meaningful and incisive,precise and appropriate,imagistic and humorous,and metaphorical and profound.The difficulties and problems of contextual containment,asymmetrical structure and semantic default found in the process of translation come from the restriction of the scenario in the context,the differences of language structure and the cultural background.To solve the problems and verify the validities of the adaptation and substitution and the specific translation strategies,the author takes contextual adaptation,structure adaptation and semantic adaptation as three solutions,and revises the translation by using respectively substance adaptation,social adaptation,mental adaptation;inner-discourse cohesion,inter-discourse restriction,linear sequence;substitution of noun elements,substitution of compound words and substitution of clause elements.Practice report and case analysis showed that the adaptation and substitution and their specific translation strategies had certain effects for the subtitle idioms translation,and they could be useful to increase translation accuracy,as well as to improve the quality of translation.It is expected that this practice report will provide some implications for the translation of subtitles idioms.
