On The Translator's Subjectivity In Biography Translation

As the globalization is speeding up, the communications of leaders in world politics, economy and other fields are also becoming closer than ever before. Biography brings the life of these public figures into the sight of people. As a result, the study of these public figures' biographies, which is one of the most important studies on modern biographical literature, also emerges. Biography, accordingly, is one of the focuses of recent research. In order to achieve the study of foreign biography or the comparative study of Chinese and foreign biographies, translation, as the inevitable medium, could never be ignored.So far, the translation and study of foreign biography focus on the biographies of famous persons, among which the most well-known one is The Autobiography written by Benjamin Franklin. Taking his autobiography as an example, most scholars just would like to discuss it from the perspective of linguistics, translation comparison and others. Nowadays, studying non-celebrities' biographies is relatively less, not to speak of combing translation with translator's subjectivity from the point of special culture and time background. After selecting Chapter Six from The House of Twenty Thousand Books written by a new Jewish author Sasha Abramsky, the writer focuses the translation report on the translator's subjectivity.At the beginning of the report, the brief introduction of translation project presents the significance of this project. During the process of theoretical and technical preparation, the writer analyzes the features of source text from language, style and text in detail. With relevant theories of Skopos Theory, the writer elaborately discusses the factors constraining translator's subjectivity shown in translation and comes up with related translation strategies through examples and analysis, facilitating the readers' understanding of foreign figures and providing other translators with some experience. As shown in the report, it is not difficult to find that translator's subjectivity gains more release and development under the guidance of Skopos Theory through the elaboration of the relation between Skopos Theory and translator's subjectivity. Through the study on Skopos Theory and translator's subjectivity, language, style and culture are defined as three factors which constrain translator's subjectivity in biography translation. Therefore, to maximize the translator's subjectivity, the writer puts forward three translation strategies and methods with consideration of morphology and syntax respectively. Finally, the report concludes that a qualified translator who wants to achieve better translation result needs to possess a broad background knowledge, familiarize himself with modern technologies and web resources and strive to experience the differences as an author, a translator and a reader.
