Fuzziness, as an essential property of language, seems to be an extremely pervasive phenomenon in language communication. With the further research of language, the fuzzy language has been widely accepted by people and constantly applied to different communication fields, such as news reports, daily conversations and business negotiations, etc. Throughout the literature study, the author finds that there are many communicative discourse studies involved in specialized usages, such as advertisement, news,law, politics, and so on, but a smaller number of studies on fuzzy language in the literary text. Therefore,the author selected Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out as a case study, trying to make an analysis of fuzzy language translation from the perspective of Adaptation Theory.The Adaptation Theory assumes language use to be a continuous making of linguistic choices with different degrees of salience for the purpose of adaptation. The possibility of choice-making based on three properties of language, namely, variability, negotiability, and adaptability. The variability and negotiability provide the condition and foundation for making the adaptability of language, while the adaptability is the core of language use which makes the dynamic choice-making within the probable range according to the communication requirements. Fuzzy language is the indispensable part of human language. Fuzzy language contributes its own charm to the literary works. Therefore, in order to convey the specific meaning of fuzzy language to the target language readers, the translator should make adaptations according to context and language in the process of translation. This thesis applies descriptive analysis to study the interpretation of the Adaptation Theory in fuzzy language translation from the aspects of contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and salience of adaptation process. First of all, the thesis will discuss the adaptation phenomena of the fuzzy language translation in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out from the perspective of Adaptation Theory. Secondly, this thesis attempts to analyze and summarize the translation methods adopted in the fuzzy language translation in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.On the basis of the case study, it can be concluded that Adaptation Theory interprets the adaptation phenomena of the fuzzy language translation in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out in the following aspects: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability,and salience of adaptation process. Restricted by special cultural background and the habit of languageuse, the fuzzy language translation in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out should make a dynamic adaptation between context and language structure. And it can be found that fuzzy language translation tends to adapt the expression of target language readers. Consequently, during the process of fuzzy language translation, context, language structure, and the salience of adaptation are interrelated and interact with each other. Besides, fuzzy language translation in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out employs some translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, and omission etc. to present the adaptation phenomena from the perspective of Adaptation Theory.
