The Great Wall Of Music

The Symphonic Suite Ode to the Great Wall was created in 1944,which is a large-scale one composed by the famous Hebei woman composer Zheng Xinlan in memory of the anniversary of Deng Xiaoping's inscription "love our China and build our Great Wall".This suite of songs shapes a musical image of the Great Wall from all aspects by use of nine movements.It is quite rare for any music composition to portray the Great Wall in the form of large-scale symphonic suite.This paper selects Ode to the Great Wall as the study and analyzing object.It consists of 4 parts.The first part introduces the information of the composer,the creation background of Ode to the Great Wall,social influence and artistic conception.The second part is mainly an analysis of music ontology,the analysis on technical level of structure configuration and timbre distribution of the nine movements.The third part analyzes and verifies the artistic features of the composition from all sides.After summarizing the formation and development of the whole suite,the application of national tune and the design of timbre distribution,it finally makes clear the development sequence of the suite as well as approaches of creating musical figure of the Great Wall.As a conclusion,the fourth part objectively describes the meaning,enlightenment and inheritance of Ode to the Great Wall,thus aiming to pass on "the Great Wall of music" which bears painstaking efforts of the composer.Zheng Xinlan created a new Great Wall with music,which is a continuance of the culture and spirit of the Great Wall.The author hopes that the music symbols representing the spirit of the Great Wall will be inherited forever,and that more relevant music compositions will come out.
