The Style Of Wang Yuan's Colored Flower-Bird Paintings

In the period about a century of the evolvement of flower-bird painting in the Yuan Dynasty, the ideological trend of literati painting lead the mainstream, in the form of "ink play" and ink meticulous painting.At the very period, as another branch of the flower-bird painting, the traditional colored meticulous flower-bird painting still existed. Wang Yuan's colored works are convincing proofs. Most of researches on Wang Yuan's flower-bird paintings concerned achievements of his ink flower-bird paintings for "the expressiveness of pure ink". On the other hand, little attention was received for his colored flower-bird paintings in aspects of "spirited from Huang Quan" and "exquisite dyeing".Based on above, this article focused on colored meticulous paintings in Wang Yuan's name, compared and analyzed the existing colored works under his name, which might be authentic or not, and speculated and summarized the artistic characteristics of his colored flower-bird paintings, in order to get the panorama of the style of this Yuan Dynasty painter's flower-bird paintings. With a perspective of development, this article took Wang Yuan as an entrance to get the overview of the change process of colored flower-bird painting from Song Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty and from Yuan Dynasty to Ming Dynasty, in the hope that more people's attention could be paid on colored flower-bird painting in the Yuan Dynasty and proper evaluation could be given in the history of painting.
