A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Chapters Twenty-Four To Twenty-Seven Of China:the Long-Lived Empire

This thesis is a translating report which takes chapter 24 to chapter 27 of China:The Long-Lived Empire as the main source text. This report briefly introduced the translation theories and skills in the translation process. China:The Long-Lived Empire is a book of travels written by American writer Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore. The part translating mainly includes:The river of fragrant tea-fields; A thousand miles up the Yangtze; A kwatsze on the Yangtze; The city of Canton.In order to finish the translation task more scientifically, the author comprehensively compares and analyzes parts of translation theories and finally selects the skopos theory as the theoretical guidance for translation. In the first part of the report, the author explored and introduced the background and the original book's writer, and the third chapter analyzed the specific case, then the author found that the skopos theory has important theoretical guiding significance. So. the author sums up some regularity of travel class during translation, which is to guide the translation before the overall background of the original text, target readers, and so on; More over, it should be paid more attention to analyze the text paragraphs, so as to choose the proper translation strategies. Under the guidance of the skopos theory and the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the author makes the intended function as the starting point and gives full consideration to the contextual factors, pay attention to the readability and Interlingual consistency so as to choose the best way to translate. In this translation project, the most important and difficult parts are the proper nouns, culture-loaded words and long difficult sentences as well. The report adopts translation strategies such as transplanting, borrowing and free translation to translate culture-loaded words, while chooses translation and free translation to render proper nouns. Also, break and integrate the long difficult sentences. In addition, the author realized the important theoretical significance of skopos theory to the translation process, and also found her inadequacies. To strive for a perfect translation, a translator needs the perseverance and excelsior spirit. The author hopes that the report can provide some help for the translation of the travel literature.
