This translation report is about the Chinese Translation Practice of the California Financial Code, which consists of laws of financial organization, banks, securities, guarantee, loan, savings, and credit to regulate the California financial operations. In consideration of the current financial situations and problems, the author wishes this translation practice could be of some assistance to improve the Chinese financial laws and regulations. The author pays close attention to the lexical gap in the process of translation. Based on the study of reasons resulting in the lexical gaps and methods of doing the Chinese translation, the author holds the view that the best ways to translate the lexical gaps are transliteration, liberal translation and some carefully crafted skills. Transliteration is usually used in translating person's name or place name or the names of the organizations or institutions. When there are some similar legal concepts in the target language, liberal translation is frequently adopted. When there is no legal concept or theory, coinage is required to create a new terminology in the target text in accordance with the interpretation of the term.
