A Practice Report On Translation Of The Introduction To Zhangshu City—From The Perspective Of Gatekeeping Theory

It has been a tendency gradually that more and more people are interested in translation studies through multiple perspectives. The past several decades witnessed the rapid development in almost every area of China. However, small cities have the need of attracting foreign capital and developing tourism. Accordingly, a good translation of city introduction can be helpful to improve the image of the city and to promote the economic development. At the same time, the impetus of studying translation will be aroused because of the deficiency of the translation of city introduction. Commonalities between translation and communication offer possibility for the research of the report and the communication factors in the translation of city introduction was discussed.Gatekeeping theory which is popularly employed in communication studies is regarded as the theoretical basis in the report. The processes of gatekeeping, including selecting, translating, censoring and publishing, are analyzed by using the examples in the translation of Introduciton to Zhangshu City which was translated by the author of the report. The levels of the translator, censor, government publisher, website personnel and readers are described as the models of gatekeeping. And various gatekeeping processes should be carried out by gatekeepers on different levels. It emphases on the manners of information control for the goal of translation and the communicating effect which includes selecting, addition, deletion, shaping, withholding, display, etc. Zhangshu, as one of the “Top 100” counties in China, enjoys good cultural, economic, and environmental advantages.The conclusions of the report are listed as follows: Firstly, it offers a new perspective for the translation of city introduction. And the main idea of gatekeeping theory are introduced to enhance the connection between the two disciplines. Secondly, insights in translation from the perspective of gatekeeping illuminate the process of information control on the macro and micro levels. In the end, it tackles the problems in translation practice and sheds light on how to overcome the obstacles in translation with the guidance of communication theories, i.e. gatekeeping theory.
