Because of the influence of art form during 1950s, Chinese arts circle has carried out lots of art activities and movements, the thoughts of "Art for the service of political, people, workers, peasants as well as soldiers" have become the chief standard that instructs Chinese art creation and education. Actually, the general assignment that the art creation and art education faced with is to perfect the transformations of various of the art styles that started from the Yanan period, meanwhile, to come close to the masses to know about and experience the real life, so that more and more new forms of art that cater to the broad masses of people can be created. Take Xiao Shufang and others artists as examples, the fundamental education of Chinese arts is proceeding under this common goal. Watercolor painting became an important media in elementary art education due to its materials and art convenience, it has also played an essential role in promoting the development of art education.As the imported goods, the water color has promoted the development of watercolor teaching tremendously during 1950s. In this process, apart from the great help that the government provided with, the great efforts that some excellent education workers have made to the watercolor teaching also cannot be ignored. Among all the excellent education workers, Xiao Shufang was one of the most outstanding female painters and educators at that time. This thesis is mainly based on Xiao Shufang's teaching notes as well as her watercolor paintings, aiming at clarifying the theme of art teaching through exploring and sorting the materials of each period. Combined with the elements such as Chinese traditional culture and national character, the thesis makes a detailed study of Xiao shufang's art teaching and puts it into the watercolor painting practices.Xiao Shufang's teaching is also began with the creation of watercolor paintings. She not only connects the ink painting technique in China with the technique of watercolor painting in west but also absorbs the Outline and CunCa techniques of traditional Chinese paintings and integrates these techniques into the creation of the watercolor paintings. Besides,she strictly takes the syllabus " integration of Chinese and western, bring forth the new through the old as well as work along both lines" as the school running policy, she also takes the sketch as the basis of modelling and attaches the importance to " imitate to build to turn." What is more, she is serious in teaching and gets along well with her students, in teaching, she passes on her knowledge and education ideas to her students without reservations.
