English-Chinese Translation Report On Agilent Technologies System DC Power Supply Series N8700 User's Guide(Chapter 3)

This report is based on the translation project---“Agilent Technologies System DC Power Supply Series N8700 User's Guide”(chapter 3) accomplished by the author independently. Operating manual is a kind of written materials which contain working principle, operation and maintenance etc. Its linguistic characteristics mainly involve simplicity, objectivity, logicality and high pertinence. This report is accomplished under the guidance of Skopos Theory. The three basic rules of Skopos Theory: the Skopos rule,the coherence rule, the fidelity rules are consistently running through the author's translation practice. Given this, the author adopts a series of feasible translation strategies including amplification, omission, conversion, restructuring, converting passive voice to active voice, literal translation and linear translation.The operating manual, with a distinct purpose, is compiled to assist and instruct operators to learn to operate and maintain the products correctly. Thus, the translator should also concentrate on its final purpose while choosing translation strategies, so as to produce an easy-to-understand translation to help users to operate equipment appropriately. In view of this, the report emphasizes on the discussion of basic translation methods. The translator put forward seven concrete and effective strategies to improve the translation efficiency and finally to give some hints and references to other translators.After the accomplishment of the translation project, the author has taken the self-assessment to further improve the translation quality. At the same time, the entrusting party also gives the relevant assessment, making the translator find her own shortcomings. Because of the limitations of time, the insufficient professional knowledge and lack of translating experience, some limitations may still exist in this project. This translation project has reached its intended goals, that is, the translation meets the requirement of the entruster and the author gains practical experiences in translation.
