Musical Imagination is essential for the development of musical technique, understanding and interpretation, improvisation and composing. Comparing with instrumental skills and compositional knowledge, the idea of developing musical imagination is abstract and of practical difficulty. We all know the importance of musical imagination, however, we don't have systematic and effective ways to train it. The well-known American composer, educator and performer Bruce Adophe's The Mind's Ear is a guide of teaching and exercises designed for the development of musical imagination, published in 2013 by Oxford University Press, which will give us great instruction. This book provides a great deal of unique approaches and detailed exercises for stimulating the musical imagination and inspiring creativity, aimed on improving the ability of reading and imaging music in silence, in “the mind's ear”; and improving the capability of improvisation and composing by strengthening the musical imagination. The book is well applicable to music students, music teachers, performers, composers and amateurs as its Language accessibly, practicability, simple engaging way. As the shortage of the musical imagination development work and translation in domestic by now, this paper offered a Chinese translation of The Mind's Ear. In the commentary part, the author of the paper gave a brief summary of the literature on musical imagination development in China and abroad, an introduction to the contents of The Mind's Ear and an analysis of its characteristic and values show its significance to the development of music imagination in China. Finally, the author discussed the personal translating experience and problems.
