| As a major subject of composing techniques, the knowledge of voice leading is widely regarded as one of the most important foundations for training musicians.Different definitions had been given by various music theorists on voice leading, among which a common agreement can be extracted: Voice leading is an art that combines concurrent musical lines or melody. The polyphonic composers in the early Renaissance codified voice leading into a set of rules, and after hundreds of years of practice and development, these rules continued to influence music composing among the world. The book Voice Leading, the Science Behind a Musical Art was authored by Ohio State University Professor of Humanities and Arts David Huron and published in 2016 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press. The author takes auditory perception to start with, and rigorously describes the formation and development of the rules of voice leading. The book lists 16 rules of voice leading, combines with a large number of scientific experiments on how humans listen and how listeners understand the world of sounds, and discusses "why this rule exists" one by one, which not only helps readers better understand the rules of voice leading, but also to provide specific composing skills. The first part of this thesis is the translation of the book.In the second part, the whole book is generalized and summarized first. The value and significance of translating the book is discussed. Then the monographs and literature resources on both composing techniques theory and auditory perception are listed and summarized. Finally, the problems encountered and thoughts that came up when translating this book is stated. |
