The Internal security Act of Singapore is a very important chapter in Singapore's constitution.It's also very important for maintenance Singapore's national security.It was derived from the Emergency Regulation Ordinance 1948,at that time Singapore was still one of the British colonies.In 1948,Guerrilla war of the Malayan Communist Party threatened Malaya's security,British colonial government claimed that Malaya was now in the state of Emergency,and then Emergency Regulation Ordinance was enacted in July 1948.Colonial government feared that the violence will spread to Singapore,and claimed that Singapore was also in the state of Emergency in the same month,as the same with Emergency Regulation Ordinance.According to Emergency Regulation Ordinance,government was endowed a special right known as preventive detention,under this bill government can arrest anyone who may threat Singapore's internal security without trial.In 1955,Labor Front government replaced Emergency Regulation Ordinance with the Preservation of Public Security Ordinance,but in essence,there is no difference between the two bills.Singapore and Malayan merged in 1963,then Singapore abolished the Preservation of Public Security Ordinance,and used 1960 Malaya Internal Security Act,after Singapore and Malaya broke up in 1965,Singapore still keep using Internal Security Act till today.Undoubtedly,from the late 40s to 60s the Internal Security Act was an effective means to suppress the left.After Singapore's independence,People's Action Party is still the most powerful party till today,with no threats from the left parties,the Internal Security Act turned to be a political tool of Singapore government from 70 s to 90 s.But With the development of the ages,Singapore people ask for more democracy in the political,People's Action Party has seldom used Internal Security Act to deal with the oppositions.In the 21 st century,especially after the September 11 terrorist attacks,Internal Security Act gradually becomes a weapon against terrorism.The internal Security Act of Singapore has always been under controversial over the years,it was treated as a mockery of democracy by western democracies,especially denounces from the western media and international human rights organizations have never stopped.For many years Singapore's opposition,democracy activists have been persecuted by the act,so they ask Singapore government to abolish the Internal Security Act.But People's Action Party fought back with Singapore's safety index,stressed the importance of internal Security Act for Singapore.As the global terrorist activities intensified,the western countries and Singapore people start to re-evaluate the internal Security Act.
