The Study Of Space And Ideology In McCullers’ Fictions

With the further development of space,space of literary has became the hot issue in literary critics.Our traditional understanding of space as the silent,physical and hollow container of mankind is changed in literary critics.“The Spatial Turn” urges us to reexamine those already widely and repeatedly studied writers such as Carson Mc Cullers.And it also urges us to ask the following questions: Does space also present as a new significant carrier in the fictions of Mc Cullers,the writer who takes writing as a form of exploration and reflection? Is there a spatial poetic in the fictions of Mc Cullers? How is space related to Mc Cullers’ ideological writing position and practice?Taking Lefebvre’s “spatial triad” as the basic theoretic framework,this article puts forward the thesis of ideological space on Sexism and Racism in Mc Cullers’ s narratives.Based on the relations of “representation of space”,“spatial practice” and “representational space”,the article examines the ways through which the protagonists in the fictions of Mc Cullers,under the regulation of “representation of space”,carrying out their “spatial practice”and their “representational space” to challenge “representation of space” so as to question the ideology of sexism and racism.And Based on the relations of physical and social spaces,the article explores Mc Cullers’ spatial ideology writing in the spatial reconstructions of women and blacks in the South America.Chapter One studies the internalized sexism in The Ballad of the Sad Cafe,analyzes the structure of Utopia “representational space” and points out its problem.Chapter Tow discusses the liminal space of Frankie,the space journey of Frankie,the challenge of Frankie in The Member of the Wedding.Chapter Three studies the subject “spatial practice” of Sherman based on the analysis of The Clock Without the Hands.Through the affirmation and doubt about racism “representation of space”,the “spatial practice” of Sherman converts from compliance to exceeding,therefore these two “spatial practice” derive conventionality “representational space” and challenging “representational space”.
