A Report Of The Translation Of The House On Mango Street

This report discusses the translation project which studies the translation of Sandra Cisneros' s The House on Mango Street. In this project, it is an important goal that the translation makes target text readers get similar even same reading response as source text readers, which also means achieving functional equivalence between source text and target text. Therefore the author translates this novel on the basis of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, and takes 4 requirements in the theory as the judgment standard of translation. This theory emphasizes function of translation, and holds that target text should bring the same reading experience as source text. According to the characteristics of The House on Mango Street, which is poetic-style novel and short-sentences dominated in terms of its stylistic feature, and numerous English names, many allusions and images in terms of its linguistic feature; the author applies transliteration, annotation and other methods to accomplish a Chinese version functionally equivalent to the source text.This translation project has been discussed in five chapters: an introduction to the project background in chapter 1; analysis of stylistic and linguistic features of source text in chapter 2; introduction to translation theory in chapter 3; case study through analyzing typical examples and project evaluation in chapter 4; conclusion in chapter 5.This report shows that guiding by Functional Equivalence Theory in translation of literature works could impel translations convey information of source text, convey spirit and style of source text; and make words fluent and natural, and conform to the expression requirements and traditions of target language; and make readers of source text and target text share similar reader-response. In this way, other excellent literature works could obtain propagation widely, and acquire more attention and discussion world-wide. Thus more fine literary works could spread widely, and get attention and discussion from the whole world. The author hopes other translators could apply Functional Equivalence Theory flexibly and accomplish more and better translations.
