Translation Practice Report For An Introduction To International Business (Chapter 1-2)

This thesis records the translator’s translation practice, from the topic selection, the thesis proposal to the translation report. The translator took the first and the second chapter of An Introduction to International Business which was a teaching material used by students majored in business English as the translation material. By analyzing this book on the whole, learning the related business knowledge, taking some cases as examples, the translator discussed the translation of word and sentences on the Text Type Theory and the Theory of Functional Equivalence proposed by Nida.Reiss first put forward three types of texts: informative texts, expressive texts and operational texts, and then Peter·Newmark proposed informative texts, expressive texts and vocative texts. The tree types of texts have different points of focus: informative texts focus on the contents of texts, expressive texts emphasize individual emotion and vocative texts take readers as the center. This original text is an exposition to introduce knowledge, so it is an informational text in term of text type. Therefore, the translator should convey accurately the original information as much as possible in the target text.As the receptors of the target text are Chinese student, so a translator should take their responses as the translating standards, for which Eugene A. Nida’s Theory of Functional Equivalence offers the basis. Eugene A. Nida thought that translating is to pursuit the natural equivalence that is most close to the original text.This thesis has totally four parts: introduction, description of translation process, case analysis and conclusion. The part of case analysis is the main body of this thesis, in which the translation at word level and syntactic level are included. The translator discussed how to use the word class conversion to deal with individual words and the ways to translate attributive sentences, long sentences and passive sentences.Due to the fast growth of global economy, exchanges and cooperation in international business have been increasing rapidly and learning cultural differences between countries is of great significance to promote international business activities. This original text mainly discusses cultural differences of international business, but the translator makes less contact with business activities and has less knowledge about international business, so it is not only a big challenge for the translator to translate it, but also an opportunity to enhance abilities and broaden horizons. In addition, it is helpful for people to master cultural differences in international business. An Introduction to International Business is a teaching material and translating it could help students to know more about business and enhance their understanding on the cultural differences of different countries. In addition, this translating practice report could provide a reference for other translators’ translation practices and studies.
