This is a report based on the translation of two chapters from the book Observing and Understanding Child Development: A Child Study Manual. The author Debra Ahola and Abbe Kovacik are both professors of early childhood education at Schenectady County Community College. This book is a psychology book on child development, which is designed to help students and practitioners learn to gather and interpret data to gain insight into child development, which will also benefit parents and laymen alike. It will inform readers of psychological knowledge which may be applied to their daily life. Child development theory is woven into each chapter in a straightforward and manageable way. It is a book that will move the reader through theory to application, and will remain a timely and important resource that can be referenced again and again. There is an extensive coverage of psychology terms, complex sentences and professional expressions in this book, which are difficult to deal with. Under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence theory, the author of this report solves specific problems encountered from the perspectives of lexicon, syntax and discourse. During the translation, the author studies features of the original textbook, reads books related to psychology and draws support from the machine translation to improve efficiency.During the translation process, the author applied methods such as division, conversion of voice, abstraction, addition etc. to achieve the effect which is much more professional, accurate and smooth. The problems encountered in the translation process benefits not only translators but also readers. It is hoped that the author's working results will contribute to the English-Chinese translation in both academic research and translation practice.
