The Collision Caused By Transgression—Research On The Relationship Between Gerard Genette's Narrative Metalepsis And Wolfgang Iser's Literary Fiction

Metalepsis and fiction are two ancient literary concepts derived from the ancient Greek. Metalepsis has been ignored by the literary theorists while the literary fiction occupy the important position in western literature. The theory about metalepsis has no development until the end of the 20th century, the French theorist Gerard Genette published The Metalepsis:from Figures to the Fiction. He systematically studied metalepsis, and summarized the development of the metalepsis theory. Almost at the same time, an encouraging progress has been made in the fiction theory. German literary anthropologist Wolfgang Iser published The Fictive and the Imaginary:Charting Literary Anthropology, which greatly promoted the development of the theory of literary fiction.Though they focus on different points, they both point at the fiction. If we scrutinize the two works, we can find that there are so many integrating points for both. So, this thesis try to prove the relationship between the theory of metalepsis and the theory of literary fiction. There is no doubt that the most integrating point for metalepsis and literary fiction is the transgression. It's the key to prove the homologous relation between them.This thesis is composed of six parts. The introduction tracks down the present development of domestic as well as abroad studies on the theory of metalepsis and literary fiction. Chapter One draws a comparison between the metalepsis and literary fiction by studying the related texts. Chapter Two studies that the metalepsis plays an important role in the fiction world. Chapter Three elaborates the synchronization phenomenon of metalepsis and literary fiction. At first, it studies three specific activities. These activities and the transgression are synchronous. Chapter Four dwells on the historical social political background of the writers'creation, explores the important significance of the metalepsis to the writer, and analyzes it's expression in other artistic form.The present thesis aims at a probe into the practical significance of the metalepsis in nowadays, the literary criticism should take responsibility for the development of the literary skill. Though the language is being distorted day by day, the metalepsis is worth studying the analyzing and combing of the relationship between the metalepsis and the literary fiction still make sense.
