It is known to all that the purpose of the quality-oriented education (suzhijiaoyu) proposed by China's Ministry of Education is to overcome the disadvantages of the traditional education which focuses on exams, to tap a person's potential to the greatest limit, and to avoid such phenomenon as high marks but poor competence. Its ultimate goal is to improve the overall quality of the nationals. There is no doubt that the quality-oriented education has received more and more recognition in China. However, there exist many problems in its specific implementation, such as excessively academic burden on the students, incorrect opinions among the parents and the like. When China is vigorously implementing the quality-oriented education at present, the issue of children's family education is often placed in the most prominent position, because it is deemed as an indispensable supplement to the school education. The current situation of Chinese family education has aroused the attention from a great many of educational experts and scholars at home and abroad. They put forward their ideas after referring to the educational modes of other countries. Therefore, the present translation project chose the book Love's Uncertainty published in 2015 and written by Teresa Kuan, an anthropology professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as the object of the translation practice and research, which is of practical value.The source text of the project includes the first chapter (The Politics of Childhood) and the second chapter (The Horrific and the Exemplary) selected from the book Love's Uncertainty. The content of the source text mainly explains the background, purpose and implementation of China's quality-oriented education, and explores the hopes and anxieties of urban, middle-class parents in contemporary China by presenting some specific cases, indicating putative differences between Chinese and American education. The translation report is composed primarily of four parts. Chapter one introduces the background, theoretical guidance, purpose and significance of the project. Chapter two describes the content and linguistic features of the source text. Chapter three focuses on translation difficulties and translation skills. Difficult points of translation are reflected in the translation of technical terms, terms with emotional colors, and long and difficult sentences. Based on Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation, the translator illustrates how to solve the problems encountered in the process of translation by adopting the translation skills of amplification, conversion, division and combination. Chapter four is the conclusion of the report, which summarizes the experience and lessons obtained from this translation practice, and lists some problems to be solved.Through this translation practice, the translator has a better understanding of the historical development of China's quality-oriented education, invoking a meditation on family education in contemporary China. The translation project is a test of the translator's professionalism. The translator has acquired some knowledge of the linguistic features of such source text and mastered its translation skills, which provides guidance and assistance for future translation. Meanwhile, this translation project allows the translator to know her deficiencies in translation and she still needs to work harder.
