A Translation Report On Uplifting The People:Three Centuries Of Black Baptists In Alabama (Chapter 1)

This is a translation report. Slavery and Reconstruction,1701-1874, as the first chapter of the book titled Uplifting the People:Three Centuries of Black Baptists in Alabama, will be the source text.This book introduces the history of the development and evolution of Alabama Missionary Baptist Church, such as its origin, church, Baptist association, Christian meeting, as well as church leaders and so on. This original chapter contains two parts, respectively the Slaves, Afro-Baptist Faith, and Black Preachers and God's Gift of Freedom. The part the translator translated introduces the history of American slaves from 1701 to 1874, and religion of African American slaves, black ministers, slaves' freedom, etc.Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory is adopted by the translator as the guidance to accurately translate Uplifting the People:Three Centuries of Black Baptists in Alabama into Chinese language, and through that the target version will familiarize more Chinese people with the development and evolution history of the African American slaves'religion and how they fought against the miserable life and hardships, oppression and exploitation and struggled for personal freedom and equal rights. In addition to spreading the American culture, it is also beneficial to increase relevant historical research data in Chinese language.When completing the report, the translator adopts Functional Equivalence Theory, that is, the lexical equivalence, syntax equivalence and textual equivalence, and stylistic equivalence as theoretical guidance and employs the literal translation and free translation, direct translation and reverse translation, amplification and omission so as to retain the original information and style features.This translation report is divided into four chapters. Chapter One is introduction, including translation background, theoretical foundation and the significance. Chapter Two introduces the source language text, including the text content, language style, the structure of the source language text. Chapter Three is the description of translation project, including pre-translation preparation, translation difficulties and solutions. Chapter Four is conclusion of the thesis.
