Study On Domestic Suspense Film In New Century

As a genre of film,suspense film put narrative emphasis on suspense and mystery.In the past 15 years,suspense film first appeared in China and soon enjoyed a rapid market-oriented development in domestic film market,becoming one of the genres that have stable audiences.The increased number of domestic suspense film has enriched the genres of films in domestic film market.But in terms of artistry,domestic suspense film still needs to be improved.Audience’s impression of domestic suspense film is that they are numerous in quantity but inferior in quality.With more introductions of foreign films and rapid development of other genres of domestic films,now suspense film is beset with troubles both internally and externally.In order to overcome these troubles,domestic suspense film firstly needs to be studied according to the market because it is a kind of commercial art.Secondly the genre-related troubles need to be researched from the perspective of art,so that to discover a good way of creation for suspense film.This paper consists of five chapters.The introduction of chapter one explained that suspense film,as the study subject,is a general definition based on the characteristics of domestic films’ genres and introduced the background and current situation of domestic suspense film.Then this paper analyzed the research achievements of previous studies and pointed out that the purpose of this study is to make an overall evaluation of domestic suspense film in terms of marketability and artistry.Chapter two is about the market research of domestic suspense film from the perspectives of cost,box office,running schedule and propaganda,which indicates that although domestic suspense film has already made some achievements during market-oriented development,it still need to be adjusted and improved.Chapter three is about the summary and classified study of the genres of domestic suspense film,which pointed out the problems of domestic suspense film and classified it into five subtypes,i.e.horror film,criminal film,psychological film,feature film and compound blockbuster,and then summarized the characteristics of these subtypes with examples.Chapter four studied the narration of domestic suspense film.Based on the narrative theory of films,this part discussed the narrative features of domestic suspense film in terms of the design of suspense,plot,space-time and narrator,and concluded what elements and symbols have been commonly used in domestic suspense film and how they were used.Chapter five is the comparative study between foreign and domestic suspense films.This part tried to find out artistic and commercial disadvantages of domestic suspense film through the comparison between domestic suspense film The Deathday Party and American suspense film Shutter Island as well as the comparison between domestic suspense film The Boundary and Korean suspense film Old Boy from the perspectives of plot design,narrative structure and commercial popularizing.In conclusion,this paper pointed out the problems and disadvantages of domestic suspense film and proposed relevant solutions by considering the current situation of domestic suspense film.
