A Study Of Lexical Features Of China English

With the wide spread of English in the world, English has achieved the global development and has become the international language. English takes roots and grows in the countries and areas where English is adopted. English absorbs the local language,culture and conventions to gain the local features with the progress of localization of English. Then English has got new English varieties. Currently, the study of English varieties has become an important linguistics issue.China English, the localized English variety in China, also catches the eyes of domestic and foreign linguists. China English develops with the development of China and the contact between China and the world. It is undoubted that China English plays a great role in international communication and spreading Chinese culture. Therefore domestic linguists make unremitting efforts to investigate China English. The debating points are from the relationship between China English and Chinglish, the property of China English, the definition of China English to the linguistic features of China English.Some linguists make surveys on the attitude towards China English domestically.However, the current researches about China English are mostly on the theoretical aspects.Based on the previous study on China English, this thesis attempts to further examine the lexical features of China English through empirical method. Beijing Review,known as the authoritative weekly magazine at home and abroad, communicates Chinese voice to the world. In The articles about China published by Beijing Review in 2014 have been collected. By means of Wordlist and Cluster in AntConc, the China English Wordlist is formed from the most frequently used 3000 words of China English. In this wordlist, the lexical features of China English are analyzed from transliteration, loan translation, loan blend and semantic transfer, and the lexical features of China English that display in cultural, political and economical field are discussed.This survey is an attempt to complement the previous studies on lexis of China English. It is of significance in theoretical and practical aspects. In theoretical aspect, this thesis makes a full account of the lexical features of China English to expand andstrengthen the understanding of China English, which lays the foundation for the systematic development and study of China English. With the respect of practical aspect,the study on lexical features of China English is beneficial for better translation of Chinese issues into English to spread the Chinese culture. The findings will have some implications for English learning and teaching in universities.
