During the period of Anti-Japanese War, Chongqing became the provisional capital, which made it the political, economic, cultural, military as well as translation center of wartime China. Under such a specific historical context, literary translation played a vital role of the dominant political discourse, among which drama translation was the most influential part. However, due to political and historical reasons, drama translation in this period has been unduly neglected and even seen as a forbidden area. Therefore, in order to fill in the gaps in translation studies, aiming at such an ignored field and by way of initially analyzing the canonical play Canxue, a drama which has been rendered several times in the wartime, this thesis attempts to explore the influence of the dominant ideology on drama translation during the period of Anti-Japanese War in Chongqing.Beginning with the introduction to studies on drama translation at home and abroad and major theories on drama translation, this thesis especially points out study on drama translation in Chongqing during the period of Anti-Japanese War in China. In addition, it also briefly describes the previous studies on ideology in translation studies. Then it touches upon cultural turn in translation studies, Lefevere and the Manipulation School as well as the Rewriting Theory. Moreover, it sketches out the background of drama translation in the wartime Chongqing, the overall literary translation and the general influence of ideology on drama translation, all of which preliminarily establish a solid foundation for the later exhaustive analysis of the case Canxue. Last but not the least this thesis displays abundant examples that embody the influence of the dominant ideology on the translation principles of drama in the wartime and further on the translation methods employed by the translator. This thesis holds that under the special historical context of Anti-Japanese War, affected intensively by the dominant ideology, translation principles of drama in Chongqing presented to be localization, popularization, practicality and performability. In order to cater to the dominant ideology and conform to the translation principles to the fullest, translation methods turned out to be adaptation, vernacularization, addition and annotation. This thesis elucidates the characteristics, principles, and methods of translation under such circumstances from the perspective of ideology. By doing so, not only can this thesis provide abundant materials and reasonable analysis for the study on drama translation in the wartime Chongqing, but also conduce to explore the characteristics and rules of translation under specific historical context, as well as shed new light on the translation history in Chongqing and manifest the tremendous contribution of drama translation to obtaining the great triumph of Anti-Japanese War in China.
