Practice Report On Chinese Translation Of Travels In Alaska(Chapter 9-10)

With the rapid development of economy and the increasing growth of population,the negative effects on environment caused by environmental pollution and ecocide through human behavior have been got more and more attention. Environmental problems such as global warming, ozone depletion, aggravation of acid rain, tropical deforestation, over-fishing, marine pollution, the rampancy of garbage, accelerated extinction of plants and animals, all these problems are endangering the survival of animals and the human environment. In order to deepen the understanding of the ecological environment, enjoy magnificent views of the nature, learn about the living conditions and customs of Alaskan, I chose the Travels in Alaska(ninth to tenth chapter) translated, written by John Muir, an American writer, the clue of which is the author’s amazing traveling experience in Alaska.The translation of locative words, geographic terms and high-frequency words is the most difficult part of this practice. The best way to solve it is to fully understand the text, and search related materials as much as you can so that the most proper words can be used. This translation practice is the cultural collision and communication between modern western culture presented by the author and the backward culture presented by aborigines living in Alaska, and between the western culture of original text and the Chinese culture of translated text. Therefore, it is very important to deliver the culture properly and maintain the idiomaticity of language. This thesis will explore the above two questions in detail in the aspects of the application of four-character structure, courteous and modest words.On the whole, this translation report aims at illustrating of the problems emerged during the course of translating, the relevant solutions to the problems as well as a summary of this translation task, in the hope that those who are translating ecological literature might draw on this.
