A Report On The Translation Of ASHARE Handbook—fundamentals(chapter 16)

The source text of this translation practice report is selected from Chapter 16(Ventilation and Infiltration) of ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals, which is mainly concerned with residential leakage and infiltration, and indoor air quality. As people?s living standard has been greatly improved, living environment and energy conservation attract more and more attentions. Besides, residential ventilation and leakage are concerned with the living comfort and safety of the residents. Therefore, translation of the text is of some practical significance for practitioners in the HVAC field.This report analyzes the translation of the selected text based on Newmark?s translation theories. According to Newmark?s text categories, the source text belongs to the informative text, which should apply communicative translation(2001a). Besides, Newmark(2001b) pointed out that communicative translation was apt to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership. Therefore, based on communicative translation, the report indicates that a TT should be loyal to the ST contents, and meanwhile consistent with the TL conventions, for the purpose of achieving equivalent effects among the TT readers as that among the ST readers. On the other hand, with communicative translation as the guideline, the equivalent effects could be achieved by applying translation methods such as conversion, amplification, omission, division, employment of parentheses and inversion, and transmitting maximum ST to fluent and smooth TT.This translation report has discussed the application of several translation strategies and methods in the translation of informative texts. It is expected that the report would provide translators and researchers of scientific translation in the HVAC field with some useful references.
