A Report On The Translation Of ABS Ship Energy Efficiency Measures(Chapter Two)

With the development of globalization, the world becomes closer and closer and at the same time the science and technology advances rapidly, so it is high time for us to be proficient in the most advanced knowledge of science and technology. China has been a shipping country since the old times, but our marine technology lags behind of other nations in some respects. Therefore, it is necessary to learn and draw lessons from the advanced shipbuilding technology abroad.This is a translation practice report and the source material is selected from the second section—Energy-saving Devices—of ABS Ship Energy Efficiency Measures published by American Bureau of Shipping in June, 2013. The energy-saving devices introduced in this section are mainly used to promote the efficiency of propellers as well as develop technologies aiming at reducing the hull frictional resistance or using renewable energy sources(such as solar and wind energy).This report is under the guidance of the textual function of Halliday’s functional grammar to probe into the translation difficulties, translation strategies and methods of shipbuilding English. Based on this theory, the textual function mainly includes theme structure, information structure and cohesion. In the translation process, the translator should be followed by the function-oriented principle and pay attention to the cohesion and coherence in discourses. Therefore, this report attaches importance to the selection of the theme, the thematic progression and cohesion. However, due to the different ways of expression in English and Chinese, the E-C translation shows distinctions in the three aspects mentioned above. For this reason, flexible strategies and methods should be adopted in the translation process so as to conform to the way of expression of the target language better. The strategies and methods employed in this translation practice include keeping the original theme, thematic progression pattern and cohesive devices in the translated text; adjusting the original theme, thematic progression pattern and cohesive devices in the translated text; omitting the original cohesive devices in the translated text; and specifying the original cohesive devices in the translated text.In addition, the source material selected in this report has not been translated before, so this translation practice has certain practical meanings. The author hopes to offer some valuable references for the translation of similar texts.
