Study Of Chinglish And Its Countermeasures In Translating The MBA Regulations Of Hunan University (2013)

This Chinese-English translation practice report is based on the author's translation of the MBA Regulations of Hunan University (2013) with over 20 thousand words, which gives an overall introduction of management issues of the Business School, The content includes Overview of the MBA Programme, Work Plan in 2011 for MBA, Standards for MBA Faculties and Standards for MBA Students. Because the MBA courses of Hunan University have become relatively mature and it's not only for Chinese students, the English version of MBA Regulations of Hunan University (2013) is essential. However, in the process of the translation practice, the author encountered a lot of difficulties in translating it into idiomatic English.Under the guidance of the book The Translator's Guide to Chinglish by Joan Pinkham, the author of this report analyzes Chinglish at the word level and sentence level. At the word level, the method of deletion is adopted to deal with the unnecessary nouns and verbs, unnecessary adjectives and adverbs, redundant twins and repetition of the same thing. At the sentence level, the method of conversion and reorganization including changing the part of speech, adding the preposition, adjusting the word order, keeping consistency and etc., are mainly utilized to tackle with the noun plague in the sentence, word order and parallel structure. It can be found that the revised version is more idiomatic in expression and can better meet the needs of the target readers.To sum up, based on the author's translation practice, this report attempts to explore the major phenomenon of Chinglish in the draft translation and proposes corresponding countermeasures. In addition, the author also points out that Chinglish in other aspects could be researched. It is hoped that this report could serve as a reference for English learners and translators.
