In recent years many universities and colleges in China(including University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, UESTC for short) are increasing the number for the enrollment of international students as China takes opening up education as its strategy of Education Reform and Development, therefore great attention has been paid to the translation of teaching management documents. In the process of translation, the top priority of a translator is to analyze text function of the original text, define its text type, choose appropriate translation strategies, and accomplish the translation which bears accurate information, consistent style and functions compared with the original text. This above described process will largely determine the quality and efficiency of translation and it is also the reason why the author has chosen this topic. As exemplified by UESTC Implementing Rules for Conferring Postgraduate Degrees, in this report the author analyzes and concludes this practice. The target of this report is to study the principles and strategies for translating Chinese university regulations into English from the perspective of Katharina Reiss’ s Theory on Text Typology and Translation. It is intended to give some references for scholars who translate and study this type of texts. This report consists of four chapters: introduction, translation process, translation principles and strategies of university regulations, and conclusions. Introduction contains the background information and task description. Translation process deals with the pre-planning and preparation of translation tools, theoretical basis, text type analysis, and consideration of translation strategies. Translation principles and strategies of university regulations is the key of this report. On the basis of Reiss’ s theory on typology, the author proposes three translation principles and summarizes three translation strategies, and discusses the combination of practical translation and theoretical analysis. In conclusion part, the author shares inspirations acquired from this task and briefs some problems.
