Research On The Allusions In The Poetry Of Du Mu

Allusion is an artistic technique widely adopted in poetry by ancient poets, among whom Xie Linyun, Li Bai, Li Shangyin, Huang Tingjian and especially Du Mu are the most skilled. Allusionscan make the sentences concise, enrich the cultural connotations and represent the author's emotions, or may be refined to presenta poetic style.Allusions are adopted in different poems with distinct features due to the differences in personalities, living periods, and writing styles of the poets. This thesis, conducting a systematic research on the allusions in Du Mu's poems, categorizes the allusions and summarizes their ch aracteristics. Furthermore, it analyzes the internal relations between the allusions and Du Mu'sthoughts, and how the allusions enhance the artistic effects of the whole poem.This thesis is divided into the introduction part and four chapters. T he introductiondescribes the research backgroundand summarizes the standards for the selection of allusions, so as to review the research status of the allusions in Du Mu's poems and discuss the significance, objectives and methodologies of the research. The introduction part serves as the basis of the following research.The first chapter divides the allusions of Du Mu's poems into two categories:language allusions and story allusions. Analysis of language allusions is based on the uses bearing the style of Shi, Sao, Historical Records, Hundred Schools of Authors, Poetry, etc.Story allusions vary from politicians, Jiang Hu poetic groups, female characters, fable legends, to fairy tales and myths. It is indicated from the analysis of the language and story all usions that how Du Mu's artistic style was originated and what his attitudes are towards the world. The second chapter summarizes the features of Du Mu's allusions, that is, dense allusions, one allusion for multiple uses, two-in-one allusions, allusions not sticking to old practices and so on, revealing Du Mu'sunique skills and personalities.The third and fourth chapters serve as the core of the whole thesis, exploring the connections between Du Mu's allusions and his thoughts, and demonstrating how the allusions deepen the artistic conceptions of Du Mu's poetry respectively. Du Mu's selection of the allusions reflects his ideas and emotions. He prefers to use allusions of upright and outspoken men to express his own uprightness, allusions of hermits to indicate his inner conflicts of being an official or not, allusions of strategic experts and powerful generalsto convey his military thoughts, and allusions of historical female characters to show his concern for females. The adoption of allusions enhances the artistic effects of Du Mu's poems in the aspects of vigorous poetic style, techniques of commenting, emotions injected into the poem, and reality implications, etc.This thesis focuses on the purpose of gaining a profound and comprehensive understanding of Du Mu'sideological personalities and artistic style through an in-depth study on the allusions of Du Mu's poetry.
