With the rising of China's international status,various news events taking place concerning this country have attracted the attention of worldwide media.Having frequently occurred in the year 2014,unexpected events relating to China have made a lot of headlines all over the western media.Because of differences in cultures and values,E-C translation of China-related unexpected events reports shows great significance in the comparative study of perspectives of Chinese and western news reports,and the all-round comprehension of China-related unexpected events involved as well.However,with respect to domestic studies on journalistic translation,a lot of researches are done on translation of political news or news about foreign affairs,while studies on translation of unexpected events reports are not that many.Hence,this report is going to discuss the strategies of translating China-related unexpected events reports,hoping to make up for this deficiency to some degree and contribute to the intensive and detailed study on journalistic translation.This report selects China-related unexpected events reports published in Los Angeles Times as the translation project in which 18 pieces of news(totally 10121 words)whose themes range from Yunnan earthquake to stampede at Shanghai gathering are involved.In this report,the author first introduces the background information and the whole work flow of the project,lists major issues and difficulties as determination of words meaning,arrangement of sentences,and grasp of standard expressions on the basis of the Skopos Theory.In the following,combining with detailed cases,the author tries to achieve the purposes of translation through understanding and determining meaning of words accurately,arranging sentences properly and applying electronic tools such as search engines and parallel texts.In the final chapter,the author summarizes personal experiences and offers available recommendations for becoming qualified in translating unexpected events report.These recommendations are:to have a good mastery of both Chinese and English language and culture,to be skilled in consulting available references,and to have a strong sense of national image.
