Report On The Translation Of The Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription

The past decades have witnessed increasing improvement of the living standards of people and medical conditions in China. Topics regarding health and fitness have drawn the attention of more and more people. On the one hand, the growing number of elder population challenges social health infrastructure. Alzheimer’s disease is a pandemic disease among the elder population, which could do irreparable harm to families with members suffering from the disease.On the other hand, faced with the severe aging issue, our stress on public health education and prevention about Alzheimer’s disease is still not very forceful, community services lack capacity to tackle Alzheimer’s disease, and a great majority of people missed early diagnosis.In the light of the social context, the writer selected the book named The Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription for E-C translation, aiming to introduce information and prevention methods related to the disease. The target text is mainly extracted from Part II of the book. In the point view of intended functions of ECST, under the guidance of Skopos theory, bearing in mind the informative function and appellative function of the source text, the writer analyzed translation strategies, especially from a particular perspective of appellative function, i.e. persuasiveness,trying to meet the translation quality standards of ECST. In order to strike the balance between informative function and appellative function, on the one hand, the writer employed literal translation to ensure the accuracy of information, and on the other hand, omission, amplification and conversion were employed to manifest the appellative function of the target text. It was found out that additional research should be carried out to fit the method originally specific to westerners into the physiology and habit of Chinese people and to narrow the gap caused by difference of people in terms of physique and lifestyle between Chinese and western countries so as to better exert persuasiveness.Based on the translation project of the report, apart from seeking suitable strategies in tackling problems in translation of ECST, the writer also hopes to draw attention to prevention methods of Alzheimer’s disease and to provide health workers with inspiration to expand the capacity of healthcare infrastructure. At last, the writer sincerely hopes that MTI students will lay stress on the introduction of latest health knowledge and scientific findings and dedicate to the development of translation of relevant studies.
