In "A Dream of Red Mansions", there are many poems, some of which are not just for entertainment, but are closely related to the construction of the whole novel. Most of those poems have the function of pre-narration, which by hiding inside the poems are mysterious and not easy to be traced. Since they are very important as a structural element of the novel and they are so difficult to be tracked, they should deserve the translators'attentions. However, there hasn't been so much thesis or books writing on this topic by far. Because of that, this paper has chosen it as its object, trying to find out something useful in order to make the latter translation much easier and more accurate. As for those poems of different stylistics, this paper has decided to divide them into three categories according to their functions, which are:(1) informative function; (2) aesthetic function; (3) metaphoric function. In the chapter of informative function, it is going to discuss the features of the Roster of Lovers, including its poetic form, the obvious and vague information it conveyed, and the way in which the information are given. In the chapter of aesthetic function, it is going to discuss the aesthetic features of the poem "Mourn of the Fallen Flowers"(Zang Hua Yin), including the appreciation of the poem's architecture, music, image, narration (time and space) and the true touching emotion. In the Chapter of metaphoric function, it is going to discuss the creative use of metaphor in A Dream of Red Mansions. By creation, it means that Cao Xueqin had created three new metaphors, which highly depended on the context. In this chapter, their structures are to be discussed, plus with the way of translating them.In all, this thesis meant to give a general introduction of the augury poems in A Dream of Red Mansions in order to attract people's attention towards them. It holds that, as the augury poems are very important in the construction of the novel, it should deserve more research into it.
