Translator's Competence In The Historical Documents Translation

Translator always plays an important role in the translation.Translating is not the simple copy of the original text.Because the translation inevitably has the translator's personal subjective ideas.As we all know,the translator is not the author.They have different backgrounds and different cultural outlooks.To some degree,the translator gives a new life to the original text.Translator has to make several choices in translating something,such as,the choice of the text and that of the strategy of translation,even the choice of a word or a phrase and so on.Every choice shows the translator's competence.As we know,the literary translation is quite different from the historical documents translation.The former requires the translator have a good esthetics,a sound creativity and a unique imagination.The latter has its own requirement.Compared with literary translation,which always focuses on the translation studies,historical documents translation has been ignored for a long time and the study is few and far between.This thesis will focus on the translator's competence of the historical documents translation by relying on the translation practice Report of the Kouang-tcheou-wan territory.Kouang-tcheou-wan has been colonized by France.This report gives a window to us to have a global idea about the whole situation of it.The report has almost a hundred years' history.The translator has a lot to do for the translation.In the introduction,we will have a general idea about this translation program,and we will know the background,the style and the content of the text.The first chapter will list the principal competences of the translator from four points of view.We will connect the theory with the practice.Each analysis will be based on the practice of translation.The second chapter is constructed on the previous two chapters.After analyzing the translator's competence,another question is followed:since translator's competence is very important for the historical documents,how can the translator improve his competence?Which method can help the translator?To resolve the above questions,we try to give some tips and advice.The last chapter mainly talks about the conclusion of this practice of translation.
