Objective:To establish a method for assessing chronological age of living people, based on the relationship between age and the index of mandibular third molar on cone beam computed tomography. Methods:Cone beam computed tomography of 274Uygur children and adolescents between 14 and 23 years of age,The apical diameter and tooth length of the root of the left lower third molar of each individual were analyzed, the third molar maturity index,I3M,was defined. The data calculated by using Pearson's correlation coefficient with the help of SPSS 21.0 statistical analysis software. Results:Correlation between the third moar index and chronological age was confirmed by employing the static test of Pearson which showed r=-0.775 with P<0.001.So the linear regression equation to calculate the choronological age was estabilishe.14-22 years old males and females:?=4.944x-14.634,r=0.773,R~2=0.595.Conclusion:The calculated equation is a reliable method of choronological age estimation using Camerier's third molar index and the presented age.It can offer reference values for forensic odontology in an age estimation of Uygur population at the Xinjiang,China.
