Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the association of vitamin D(VD)deficiency with the levels of total cholesterol(TC),triglycerides(TG)and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C)in schizophrenic patients. Methods Two hundred twenty-nine patients with schizophrenia were recruited the Fourth Hospital in He Fei from May 2016 to April 2017.Information about demographic characteristics and life style were obtained through questionnaire.Fasting blood sample was collected and plasma concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D],TC,TG and HDL-C were measured using commercial kits. The association between vitamin D deficiency and lipid levels was assessed by multiple regression model. Results The mean levels of 25(OH)D,TC,TG and HDL-C in schizophrenic patients were(45.9 ± 21.3)nmol/L,(4.1 ± 0.8)mmol/L,(1.2 ± 0.7)mmol/L and(1.2 ± 0.3)mmol/L,respectively.The incidence of VD deficiency(<50nmol / L)was 60.3% in schizophrenic patients. After controlling for confounders, patients with VD deficiency had significantly higher level of TG(adjusted ?=0.226mmol/L,95%CI: 0.015,0.436)and lower level of HDL-C(adjusted ? =-0.091mmol/L,95%CI:-0.178,0.004)than patients without VD deficiency.Compared with patients without VD deficiency, the risk of dyslipidemia in TG(adjusted OR=2.80,95%CI: 1.21-6.46)and HDL-C(adjusted OR=2.48,95%CI: 1.35-4.56)significantly increased in patients with VD deficiency. Conclusion VD deficiency may be associated with dyslipidemia in schizophrenic patients.
