BackgroundIn recent years, the problem of frailty among elderly has become the focus in nursing research field. As people age, they are more likely to have things go wrong with them. The things that they have wrong with them can be called deficits. The more deficits that they have, the more susceptible they are to.adverse health outcomes, such as worse health and even death. This state of increased risk of adverse health outcomes is known as frailty. The more deficits that people have, the frailer they are. With the increase of age, sleep quality of the elderly also changed greatly, sleep disorder will cause inattention, listlessness, emotional irritability, adverse effects on physical and mental health of the elderly, bring huge economic burden to family and society.Although researches on frailty among elderly have been increasing in the world, domestic study about it is still in its infancy, and main population are community people, the correlation between frailty and quality of sleep among hospitalized elderly has not yet been reported.ObjectiveThe purposes of this article were to investigate the current status, influencing factors of frailty and sleep quality among elderly in hospital, and to figure out the distributions correlation between frailty and sleep quality, further to explore the risk factors of frailty and abnormal sleep. We aim to provide evidences for future measures which focus on improving sleep quality and frailty status among elderly in hospital. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in department of geriatrics of the first affiliated hospital of Nanjing Medical University.A total of 256 hospitalized elderly are included in the analysis.Survey tools include the self-designed questionnaire,Tilburg Frailty Indicator(TFI)and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).We complete the questionnaires by face-to-face interviews. We use excel for data entry and SPSS for data analysis. We make a descriptive analysis of frailty and sleep quality among the elderly.T-test and One-way Anova are used to compare the score differences in each dimension of frailty and sleep quality among the elderly of different basic situations.Multivariate liner regression model was employed to analyze risk factors associated with frailty and sleep quality.Pearsoncorrelation was used to analyze the relationship between frailty and sleep quality among elderly in hospital.Results1.The current status and influencing factors of frailty among elders in hospital. The prevalence of robustness and frailty were 13.9%and 86.1%.Hobby,number of drugs used, smoking,BMIand length of stay entered the multiple logistic regression equation.2.The current status and influencing factors of sleep quality among elders in hospital.People whose sleep conditions were graded as well and poor were accounted for 40.5%,59.5%.Hobby,sex,number of drugs used, degree of educationjob before retirement, length of stay and income entered the multiple logistic regression equation.3.Relationship between frailty and sleep quality among hospitalized elders. All the factors of sleep quality in hospitalized elderly patients were positively correlated with the scores of all dimensions of frailty(r=0.39).Conclusions1.Obesity,low body weight,no hobbies, multiple medicationsand prolonged bed stay in the elderly during the day have a higher risk of frailty.2.The elderly patients in hospital with the characters of male, high educational level, who had mental work,no hobbies or multiple medications had a poor sleep quality.3.The frailty of elderly patients in hospital is related to the quality of sleep. The more serious the problem of frailty, the worse the quality of sleep.
