Benign cicatricial airway stenosis(BCAS)is a common ailment usually caused by several diseases leading to scar hyperplasia,contracture and the collapse of tracheal wall.Severe stenosis of airway may even cause severe respiratory failure,which can lead to death.BCAS can be caused by tracheal intubation,tracheotomy,tracheobronchial tuberculosis,tracheobronchial anastomosis,chest trauma,stent implantation,inhalation injury.The most common causes are tracheal intubation and tracheotomy.Unlike the United States and Europe,the main cause of BCAS in China is tuberculosis.BCAS can be divided into three types : Web-like stenosis,Granulation stenosis and Complex stenosis.And patients should be given different therapies(such as endoscopic techniques,Open surgery,drugs)based on their different type of stenosis,while there are numerous therapies,all have their defects.so far there is no unified treatment criteria,and no consensus about treatment strategies,which looks a little messy.The general therapeutic effect of BCAS is poor.stenosis can easily become recurrent,so improving efficacy,reducing or even eliminating the complications of airway stenosis therapy always easily for us to focus on.In recent years,though various treatments on lung which has been developed dramatically is bringing a new way to airway stenosis therapy,but huge challenges remain ahead.This article aimed to provide reference for clinical workers when choosing clinical therapeutic regimen,by overview the status and research progress of BCAS therapy and the formation mechanism of airway scar.
