Objectives: To reveal the characteristics of collection of Chinese medicine prescriptions for diabetes in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)literature(before 1840),therefore the evolutionary process of ancient TCM understanding of diabetes theory.To quantitatively determine the influence power of the ancient TCM literature according to diabetes related prescriptions then and later generations,consequently further explore the treatment methods of diabetes and provide original research ideas and provide TCM ancient literature support.Methods: In this study,we combined the traditional literature research methods and modern literature methodology and extracted and sorted out the prescriptions in TCM ancient books.The study related books were all involved in the "Zhong Hua Yi Dian"(Second Edition)and the time span of the related books were from the Pre-Qin Period to the premetaphas of Qing Dynasty(before AD 1840).Key words were selected from the Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor,General Treatise on Causes and Manifestations of All Diseases and Taiping Holy Prescriptions for Universal Relief in a total of 18 Diabetes Related words,including Xiao-Ke,Xiao-Dan,Pi-Dan,Nei-Xiao,Fei-Xiao,Ge-Xiao,Re-Zhong,Shi-Yi,Ke-Li,Shen-Xiao,Xiao-Shen,Qiang-Zhong,Shang-Xiao,Xia-Xiao,Zhong-Xiao,Xiao-Zhong,Xiao.From the retrieved target literature,the books were depleted if the forming time can be generally presumed,and the order of the books is arranged in chronological order according to forming time.In order to determine the citation relations of the diabetes related prescriptions and books,we defined a corresponding criteria for citation relations.And on this basis,the citation frequencies among the ancient TCM books were counted.Furthermore according to the analysis of the contribution of different ancient TCM books relating in different historical periods,we proposed several representative ancient TCM core books and prescriptions.Thereby according to the understanding of the classification of diabetes of the collection of the prescriptions in the core ancient TCM books related to diabetes.Results: From the Pre-Qin Period to the premetaphas of Qing Dynasty(before AD 1840),This study included a total of 477 ancient TCM books,132 books recorded diabetes related prescriptions,the earliest one is Zhang Zhongjing's work Treatise on Cold Pathogenic and Miscellaneous Diseases,the last one is Chen Xiuyuan's work Medical Conformity.A total of 81 ancient books possess citation relations,a total of 2402 prescriptions were extracted,a total of 619 prescriptions with citation relations were extracted.Conclusions: On the basis of five historical stages including Qin and Han Dynasties,the Tang and the Five Dynasties,the Ming Dynasty,Song Jinyuan period and Qing Dynasty,take the process of writing and the author's background into accounts,we proposed 7 ancient TCM core books including Essential Recipes for Emergent Use Worth A Thousand Gold,Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library,Taiping Holy Prescriptions for Universal Relief,General Records of Holy Universal Relief,Prescriptions for Universal Relief,Principle and Prohibition for Medical Profession,and Effective Use of Set Formulas.The literature obsolescence can be observed in the influence of ancient TCM books and the the aging speed is getting faster and faster.According to the classification of diabetes treatment records of the core ancient TCM prescriptions related to diabetes,we found that the TCM academic system of diabetes gradually developed from the more primitive partition systems which take the symptoms as the classification standard,take the parallel multiple classification and mixed-use of a variety of similar words as the characteristics,and advanced with time it gradually converted to taking the pathogenesis of diabetes as the criteria for the classification of diabetes.
