ObjectiveTo investigate the current situation of geriatric syndromes and quality of life in hospitalized elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus,to explore the accumulated effects of multiple geriatric syndromes on quality of life, and to promote the clinical nurses to focus on patients' physical and mental health and take active measures to help them improve the quality of life.MethodsThe descriptive study was conducted on 397 convenient selected elderly patients with type 2 diabetes from geriatric and endocrinology departments of XX hospital from September 2015 to March 2016.These patients were investigated for general information, chronic pain, chronic constipation,falls,poly-pharmacy,urinary incontinence, malnutrition, sleep disorder as well as their quality of life.Data were inputted and analyzed by Statistical Product and Service Solutions 17.0 software package. The quality of life in different patients was compared by independent sample t test and one-way ANOVA.The correlation analysis used Spearman's rank correlation analysis. And the multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the influence factors of quality of life.Results1.The average physical component summary was(277.11±64.30),and mental component summary was(307.00±60.45).In the eight dimensions of quality of life, the role-emotional score was the highest, and general health score was the lowest.2.70.5% of patients had poly-pharmacy,and 56.4% had sleep disorder. The prevalence of chronic pain, chronic constipation, fall, urinary incontinence, malnutrition was 44.1%,31.5%,31.2%,26.4%,20.9% respectively. The patients averagely had(2.81±1.38)geriatric syndromes, and 81.9% of them had two or more geriatric syndromes.3.The age, occupation and pathways of payment had an impact on patients physicalcomponent summary(P<0.05),and the mental component summary was affected by age, marital status, educational level and occupation(P<0.05);Glycated Hemoglobin A1 c values, duration and number of comorbidity was negatively correlated with both physical and mental health(rs=-0.338 ~-0.132,P<0.05).4.All of the seven geriatric syndromes and the number of geriatric syndrome were had an effect on patients' physical and mental health(P<0.05).5.Multiple stepwise regression analysis found that the number of geriatric syndrome was included both in the multiple regression equations of the physical health and mental health, which accounted for 29.9% and 23.0% of the total variation respectively.ConclusionsThe incidence of geriatric syndrome in hospitalized elderly patients with type 2diabetes is high, and even many patients have multiple geriatric syndromes at the same time. The patients' quality of life is not optimistic. The quality of life can be affected by demographic characteristics and condition, but multiple geriatric syndromes are closely associated with physical health and mental health. This effect is even more important than the demographic factors and patient's condition.
