Objective: Literature review of the etiology of temporomandibular disorders. To analyse the etiology distribution of 366 patients in our hospital with TMD,including sex, age, malocclusion, occlusal interference, third molar, iatrogenic occlusal factors, trauma and dysplasia, which provide a basis for research of etiology of temporomandibular joint disorders. Methods: A total of 366 patients with temporomandibular joint snapping, joint area and masticatory muscle pain, restriction of mouth opening and other symptoms in the Department of Stomatology at the Lanzhou University, from January 2015 to December 2016,According to diagnostic standard of Ma Xuchen and Zhang Zhenkang's classification, through the clinical examination and CBCT imaging examination determined as temporomandibular joint disorder(TMD),and then analysed the cause of TMD.Results: The proportion of male in 366 patients with TMD was 27.6%,and 74.4% in female, which indicated that the proportion of female patients were higher than those in males. The number of patients aged 20-29 was the highest with a proportion of 45.1%,as compared to other age groups.During the 366 cases, occlusal factors accounted for 73.4% with 31.7% of malocclusion, and there is a certain proportion of deep overbite, occlusal interference, multiple posterior teeth missing, third molar and iatrogenic occlusal factors, and bruxism accounted for 12.1%,while unilateral chewing, tongue swallowing and other bad habits accounted for 12.5%.12.3% of occlusal interference, side chewing and tongue swallowing and other bad habits accounted for 12.4%.Conclusion: Cross sectional analysis showed that malocclusion, occlusal interference, unilateral chewing and tongue swallowing, bruxism, iatrogenic occlusal factors, multiple posterior teeth missing and eruption anomaly of the third molar are closely related to temporomandibular joint disorders. We need to design prospective experiment prospective randomly controlled trials or further research.
