Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy of electro-acupuncture therapy from acute phase and non-acute phase, find the optimal timing of electro-acupuncture intervene in the treatment of facial paralysis. To compare the intervene of electro-acupuncture in acute phase and non-acute phase on facial paralysis New Zealand rabbits from the perspective of morphology changes, neuronal survival status and ultra-structural changes.Clarify the partial mechanism. Methods: In clinical study,we took 72 patients with facial paralysis whose disease duration between onset to 3 days as observed object. These patients were divided into the electro-acupuncture group 1(EA1)and electro-acupuncture group 2(EA2)randomly.Electro-acupuncture therapy on EA1 from onset while EA2 use normal acupuncture first week, from second week both two groups use electro-acupuncture.After 4 weeks' therapy, compare the clinical efficacy between two groups. In the study of mechanism of this issue,we selected 50 healthy New Zealand rabbits divided into bland control group, model group,sham-operated group,electro-acupuncture group 1(EA1)and electro-acupuncture group 2(EA2)randomly,10 in each group, sex in half.Copy and evaluate facial nerve injury model.Electro-acupuncture therapy on EA1 from onset while EA2 use normal acupuncture first week, from second week both two groups use electro-acupuncture.Other groups not for treatment but normal feeding.Compare these groups from perspective of morphology changes, neuronal survival status and ultra-structural changes after 4 weeks.Result: After statistical analysis of the clinical study, two groups both better than before treatment, difference was statistically significant, shows that the two methods are both effective in the treatment of facial paralysis. The results of EA1 are better than EA2,differences were statistically significant. In the aspects of facial nerve injury repair mechanism, there were statistically significant differences on morphology changes, neuronal survival status and ultra-structural changes, the results of EA1 are closer to blank control group and sham-operated group than EA2.Conclusion: The clinical efficacy of electro-acupuncture therapy from acute phase is better than non-acute phase in treatment of facial paralysis. It can be improved survival rate of motor neuron, promoted axonal regeneration and remyelination, thus enhance facial nerve regeneration.
