BackgroundHelicobacter pylori(HP)has been recognized as the main pathogen for gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric carcinoma and gastric mucosa-associated lymphomais. In recent years, evidence suggests that chronic infection with HP can play a protective role by immunomodulation against some immune-related diseases such as allergic asthma and allergic dermatitis The etiology and pathogenesis of IBD have not been known clearly, many researches have shown that HP infection has a protective effect on the occurrence of IBD sincethe overactive immune reactionisregarded as an important pathogenic factorof IBD.Conclusions of the relationship between the two diseases are still controversial. We want to clarify the relationship between HP infection and IBD through the study of the initial diagnosis of IBD patients with HP infection.ObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and inflammatory bowel disease.MethodsIn this case-control study, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of caseand control group, one hundred newly diagnosed inflammatory bowel disease patients were selected as the case group.Control group included two hundred healthy subjectswith no organic disease or normol result in electronic colonoscopy examination,HP detection was based on enzyme linked immunosorbent(ELISA),and thepositive-antibody was identified as HP infection. The HP infection rate of the two groups were compared. The relationship between HPinfection and IBD was investigated byLogistic regression analysis, followed by a subgroup analysis on HP infection rate indifferent phenotypic characteristics and different degree of IBD patients.ResultsA statistically significant difference was noted in HP infection rate between IBD patients(39.00%)and controls(59%)(P<0.05).Logistic regression analysisshowed there was inverse correlation between HP infection and IBD patients(OR=0.450 95%CI=0.274-0.737 P=0.002).In addition, the difference of HP infection rate in different phenotypic traits and severity degrees of CD patients has no statistical significance(P > 0.05).Conclusions1.HP infection may be the protective factor of IBD;2.There was no correlation between HPinfection and IBD phenotype;3.There was no significant correlation between HP infection and the severity degree of IBD.
