| Objective: To explore the value of ultrasonography in assessing the anatomical cross-sectional area(ACSA)of the supraspinatus muscle,supraspinatus ACSA was measured under two different protocols by ultrasonography for two consecutive days.The reliability and limits of agreement for supraspinatus ACSA were analysed between two days and between the two protocols.Methods: The right supraspinatus muscle of 100 participants were examined by ultrasonography under two different protocols on two consecutive days,respectively.Repeated-measures analysis of variance(ANOVA)was used to analyze the impact of the two different protocols and two different days on supraspinatus ACSA.The intra-class correlation coefficient(ICC)was used to evaluate the reliability of measurements on two protocols.Bland–Altman plots was used to compare the limits of agreement of measurements between two days and between the two protocols.Results:The ACSA values were,respectively,6.31±1.09cm2 and6.29±1.09cm2 between day 1 and day 2 on protocol 1,and the difference was not statistically significant(P > 0.05).The ACSA values were,respectively,6.45±1.10cm2 and 6.51±1.11cm2 between day 1 and day 2 on protocol 2,and the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The ACSA values were,respectively,6.30±1.09cm2 and 6.48±1.10cm2 between protocol 1 and protocol 2,and the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The ICC ranged from 0.95 to 0.97.The limits of agreement for supraspinatus ACSA was about±0.5 cm2 in two different days and about ±0.5 cm2 in two different protocols.Conclusions:Our studies show that ultrasonography has a high reliability in measuring supraspinatus ACSA by these two protocols.It can be sensitive to detect the changes in muscle size of supraspinatus ACSA by the two protocols.These two protocols,not only have a high reliability,but also can be used interchangeably,which can provide a reliable and convenient option for the diagnosis of supraspinatus muscle disease. |
